Area Author Meet & Greet

  • St. Ignace Public Library 110 West Spruce Street St. Ignace, MI, 49781 United States (map)

UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ellen Airgood is unable to attend. Tom North of St. Ignace will join Mikel Classen.

In cooperation with the St. Ignace Public Library, the Michilimackinac Historical Society presents Area Authors Meet & Greet.

Join us for a meet & greet with two award-winning authors from the Upper Peninsula: Tom North and Mikel Classen.

Tom North has lived and worked in Michigan's Straits of Mackinac area for over 50 years, where he served from 1992 to 2007 as Mackinac/Luce Counties probate judge and previously practiced law. Since 2007, he has been engaged in numerous pursuits, including ongoing part time alternative dispute resolution work,  and many forms of volunteer work from authoring briefs in U.S. Supreme Court cases, to local animal welfare efforts. His frequent presence on Mackinac Island over the years, including living on the island in 1977 and 1980, led to a keen interest in, and knowledge of, its history. In 2008, a discussion with a friend employed by Arcadia Publishing indirectly led to his authoring of "Mackinac Island- Images of America", which was published in 2011. Within the first year, it became one of Arcadia's best selling titles out of over 5,000 local history books they have published throughout the U.S., and interest in the book has remained strong since.

Residing in Sault Ste. Marie, Mikel writes about life and cultures of the U.P. as well as lost stories from the past. His books include True Tales: The Forgotten History of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Lake Superior Tales: Stories of Humor and Adventure in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
