[History Hounds] Rutherfraud?: Hayes and the 1876 Presidential Election with Dr. Dustin McLochlin, Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center
News outlets often use the 1876 U.S. presidential election to highlight peculiarities in the nation’s election system. In addition to the partisan nature of a Congressional Electoral Commission that Congress created to settle the dispute, commentators also highlight a supposed bargain wherein Hayes traded federal troops in the South for his electoral victory. Yet the historical record is more complicated. This talk will discuss the controversial election and provide background on Rutherford B. Hayes and his evolution in thought on slavery, race, and civil rights.
