History Hounds | Ancient Pottery, Cuisine, and Society at the Northern Great Lakes

[History Hounds] Ancient Pottery, Cuisine, and Society at the Northern Great Lakes with Susan Kooiman, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville

In this archaeological investigation of peoples from the Northern Great Lakes region, Kooiman will trace the coevolution of Natives’ prepared foods and the ceramic tools they used to cook and store them. By examining pottery from Drummond Island’s Cloudman site—located on the far eastern side of the Upper Peninsula—the speaker will identify relationships between the pottery technology, cooking methods, and cuisine of Michigan’s early inhabitants and form hypotheses about how those factors affected Indigenous social patterns.
