A cooper is someone who makes or repairs casks and barrels. This cooper's drawknife would have been used to remove bark from a piece of wood, or to shape the wood by scraping the surface. The wooden handles made it easier to grip. You needed a sharp blade and steady hands to pull the knife evenly over the rough wooden surface. It's no wonder casks were used and reused. It was a lot of work to make them!
