The Betty Lamp dates back to the early 1600s. And no, it is not named for a famous Betty, like Betty Crocker! Its name is derived from the German word "besser" which means "better." Curiously enough, the American Home Economics Association adopted the Betty Lamp as their symbol of learning. Perhaps they envisioned a stronger connection to someone famous? Regardless, this little lamp would have been a primary source of household light, burning fat or fish oil with a twisted cloth wick.
