If you look closely at this beautiful little box, you will see that the intricate patterns on it are made from porcupine quills! This art form is unique to North America and to Native American people. The quills are dyed and then carefully inserted into birch bark (as shown here), or into a hide. These quilled birch bark boxes were a popular trade item in the 19th century. Talk about a dangerous hobby!
