Porcupine quills are dangerous, sharp things...not something you want to leave lying around! Sometimes these pouches were made from animal bladders. This particular example is made of leather. It held the quills that were used to decorate clothing, boxes and more. The bone awl would be used to bend the quills and get them through the leather or birch bark. Think of this as a very early sewing kit!
