We're fortunate in that this artifact retains its maker's mark. This straight food chopper was made by W. Greaves & Sons of New York. William Greaves was a cutler who partnered with his sons to make and supply trade goods such as this chopper. The company was known for its table knives, razors, files, and copper tools. This chopper probably had many uses, such as smashing or mincing. Our best information dates this piece from 1816-1823.
