This metal curling iron (missing its thick wooden handles) would have been heated over a fire or stove before some daring woman wrapped it in her hair. There was no temperature regulation on this one, much less a safety switch. It would have been very easy to end up with burned hair or a singed scalp. Vanity was a little scary in the days before electricity!
