If you were out fishing and snagged a monster fish, you wouldn't be able to get it into the boat while it was struggling and flailing. You'd be likely to lose the fish or break your line. This fish gaff would have been used to stab the fish and then lift it into the boat. Can you imagine the grin on the face of the fisherman who caught something so large that it required this tool?
